Chicago, Illinois – River North
Drinks – Summer 2025
Final Dane Score: 4.4 — Recommended. A nightclub that understands restraint.
After a bit of a hiatus, this feels like the right place to come back. Kashmir is not really a "quiet" reentry, but that is probably the point. It has enough personality to write about and enough restraint to avoid becoming just another loud West Loop room with expensive cocktails.
A first post back should have something to say. I feel like Kashmir did.
The Setting
Kashmir certainly leans club before anything else, which is clear within a few minutes. The space opens up toward the back into a large bar area, and as the night builds, so does the energy. We arrived early (first in) which gave the room a different feel.
It’s not subtle, but it’s not chaotic either. The night went on, and the room filled quickly. Packed, but not suffocating. People moved, but it never tipped into that shoulder-to-shoulder push you get in most West Loop spots trying to do the same thing.
The music helped. House-driven, but not rigid. Early 2000s slipped in, some reggaeton, nothing jarring. Something for everyone.

The People
We were introduced to Erin early on (not only was she behind the bar, but she designed the cocktail menu – impressive!). She walked us through the drinks with a clear understanding of what worked and why. She also let us try something new she’s rotating in. No theatrics, no over-explaining, which was nice.
She’s also the reason the menu feels coherent. There’s range, but it doesn’t drift. You can order across styles and still feel like you’re in the same place. In a space so chaotic (as nightclubs tend to be), you would expect the quality of service to fall as the night progressed; but we were able to maintain our service, and were served quickly and attentively. That was really impressive.
We also spent some time talking with Courtney, one of the security guards. He stood out in a different way. He was observant, clearly invested in what’s going on around him. Not just doing a job. You get the sense he knows the regulars, respects the space, and takes some pride in it. That kind of presence changes how a place feels, even if you can’t immediately articulate why.
And more broadly, the staff seemed to actually like being there. That’s not common in places like this.
The Drinks
The menu is where Kashmir separates itself from the usual West Loop formula.
It’s varied without being messy. A few things stood out:
Light As A Feather – Gin, blueberry lavender, cucumber, lemon, pinot noir. This was the best of the night. Clean, layered, not overly sweet. I asked for a bit of spice added, which gave it a sharper edge and rounded it out. But even as-is, it works.
Goonies Never Say Die – Tequila, Mexican rum, strawberry, chipotle, lime. This was Jade’s. Strong, slightly smoky, more aggressive than mine but still controlled.
Brown Butter Espresso Martini – Good. Exactly what you expect. Nothing wrong with it, nothing pushing it forward.
We closed with a bottle of Spanish Albariño. $60, which in a place like this is almost suspiciously reasonable. It was good, and more importantly, it made sense with everything else we had. Overall, the pricing is surprisingly restrained. You expect to get drained in a room like this. You don’t.
The Experience
Kashmir is very aware of what it is. That’s its advantage.
It could easily tip into the usual River North trap and be expensive, loud, and interchangeable. It doesn’t. The room fills, the music builds, but it never loses control. The drinks are thoughtful. The staff is engaged. The whole thing holds together.
There’s no food, but that’s not the point here. This is a bar first, and it sticks to that.
I went in expecting something more unorganized and chaotic. I left impressed.

In Short
Kashmir could have been another nightclub with decent drinks. It isn’t. The menu has intention. The staff cares. The room fills without losing itself. That’s harder to pull off than it looks.
Go early. Stay later than you planned. ;)
